Skeletons and Demons Part II by Carol Naylor

She opened the room for her daughters and suggested that they order a light snack and eat in the room then they could watch tv before having an early night. Their murmurings suggested compliance which suited Jane.
"I'll give your father a quick ring to see what time he's arriving tomorrow," Jane shouted through the door, fumbling with the key to her own room. When she entered the room Jane was pleasantly surprised to see a spacious room with a four-poster tucked away in the corner. Delightful. Should she ring Dave or open the letter? Perhaps she ought to ring Dave first then she could relax. She searched in her bag for her mobile and reached his voicemail; he was too busy to speak to anyone! Typical.

"Hi Dave, it's Jane. Arrived safely, the hotel is pleasant. I had hoped to have spoken to you but I am sure that you must still be busy working. Poor thing! Ring me back when you get this message and let me know which train you are catching tomorrow." She paused then added,"Love you," before switching off her phone. That was another stupid comment, two within the last ten minutes. Why was she so nervous? Dave will squirm when he hears that, Jane thought.
She threw herself on the bed, kicked off her shoes and opened the letter with a girlish sense of excitement and anticipation.

Hi Jane!
Welcome to pur neck of the woods as they say in Yorkshire. Glad you finally made it! The table is booked for 7.0.p.m. tomorrow so be there sharp! It's Kites, one of your favourite haunts, Grape Lane, near the Minster.
You'll remember it, I'm sure. Have a good day shopping in the morning. See you all later.

                               Fondest love,

                                          Pete.

Would she remember Pete? Will he have changed? How would she recognise him?
A first love is always special, so special that you never quite get over it. This thought worried Jane. Time had ravaged this first love, both had moved on and found excitement in other relationships. She hid the letter in her bag, perused the menu and ordered a turkey pannini. She curled up in front of the tv and drifted off to sleep before the food arrived......

............Sue had a few sleepless nights worrying about the reunion. What would it be like seeing him again after their passionate affair had come to an abrupt end? Fortunately, Pete had not found out but she still carried an overwhelming sense of guilt in case he did find out. He believed in complete fidelity. The children were growing up and becoming independent, they needed her less. Soon they would move away and lead their own lives. Could she face him again without feeling desire? Would he look at her longingly and would she betray her feelings? Would he? What if his desire for her had truly died and he couldn't bear to look at her in the old way? She was alone in the house and distraught as she picked up the phone and dialled.

"Hello?"
After an uncomfortable pause,
"Dave?"
"Yes, who is it?" Dave was feeling agitated enough with his business and guilty that he had not contacted Jane about the weekend trip. He felt rattled by this intruder whoever she was and exploded down the phone,
"What the hell do you want? Who is this?"
She burst into tears and between incontrollable sobs whispered,
"It's..it's..Sue.D..Don't pput the phone down. P..Please, I need to talk to you."
There was another pause but this time it was Dave who felt wretched and speechless. What could he say to her? He had banished her from his life and warned her never to contact him ever again. Their friendship had ended acrimoniously six months ago. It had been conducted in a clandestine fashion but it had run its course. Dave had not wanted to divorce Jane or leave his daughters. He couldn't deal with it right now.

"Look Sue, I am having a bit of a bad time at the moment. It's not a good time to talk."
"But I need to talk to you before tomorrow," Sue had regained her strength and was more articulate.
"Does Jane know?"
"You mean about us?" Dave was becoming irritated.
"Look, Sue, why have you phoned me?" There was anger in his voice.
Sue broke down again and this time she was unable to regain her composure.
The phone went dead and Dave felt a strong wave of guilt engulf him.
